Egg Drop

My groups ideas were good, we just didn't build our egg drop very well. We had this idea that our parachute would work, but it ended up not being able to hold the weight of the egg, and our popsicle stick thing didn't work as well as we thought it would. If we had built it the right way it might have worked, but we didn't. Our popsicle stick thing was lobsided and the edges were not very high. Then the string that we tied to the popsicle stick thing had one string that was longer than the other which is what made it lopsided, and we didn't figure that out until it was already glued down. Our parachute didn't catch air at all, or else it might have worked a little better.
So if I did it again I would use a trash bag as a parachute because it was strong enough to hold the egg, and it caught air well. Also I would make a box-lik structure like Casey's group did because their's worked really well. I'm not sure if I would have used jello or not because it didn't really seem to serve a useful purpose to me, because I think their's would have worked without jello. Kayla and Maci showed me their's and it had a lot of padding, but it didn't survive the fall in the gym, so that convinced me to go with less padding. One of the other idea's was to have paper around the edges, it worked in the gym, but I can't remember if it worked at the football field. That is what I would do if I could do it all over again!

What I Learned on My Trip

I learned that there are really ghosts, because this man on the boat ride told us this story and at the end we passed this building and the captain's face was on it, I was really freaked out! Also I learned that jellyfish are not made of a clear substance like I thought they would be, they were a blue-purple color. We saw this rocket at NASA and I never thought that the rockets were that huge, it was enormous! On the last day we went to an aquarium and we dissected a squid, and now I know all about squid insides. We also went on a kind of behind the scenes tour and saw all the filters and new and sick animals. That is what I learned on the trip last week!

The Great Depression

I am really glad I wasn't alive when The Great Depression was going on! Some people think that we were really close to a second Great Depression last year! During The Great Depression banks failed and all the money your family had earned was gone, you had to sell your house, etc. More people would have lost their jobs now because one of the reasons so many people were fired during The Great Depression was because machines took over their jobs. Also other businesses had to close down or risk bankruptcy. This is only part of what made The Great Depression so horrible!

8th Grade Trip

I am looking forward to going on the boat, and being by the ocean because my family hasn't gone to the ocean in a long time! Also I've never been to NASA so that will be a new experience for me. The bus rides are always interesting, getting up early in the morning and spending half the day on a bus with your classmates, that's always fun! I don't remember what else we are doing, but I hope we have to time to play in the ocean for a little while. That is what I'm looking forward to on the 8th grade trip!

Surveillance Camera

I think the outside of buildings should be under surveillance, so that if there is a crime you can see the criminal. It would help catch the criminals faster, and you could see them and catch them before they steal or vandalize anything. If it was on the inside I think that is an invasion of privacy.

The Holocaust

In Mrs. Moore's reading class we have been learning about the Holocaust and read the Diary of Anne Frank. I have learned about a lot of horrible things that happened to those people, and that the people were not just Jewish, there were Christians and other ways of life too! There were some really awful ways that Hitler thought up to torture people: gas chambers, crematorium's, and some people were beaten to death. You were barely fed and were cramed in with tons of other people in a small room where you had to live. There were also different kinds of camps, death camps or work camps, if you were not strong enough you were sent to a death camp. This is just some information that I learned about the Holocaust.

Jack London

Jack London lived a difficult life, he went through a lot of hard times. He had to start working when he was eight years old to support himself. Later on he became homeless, but he turned his life around. He started reading and writing and made some money. He was married, but got divorced and then married again. Sadly his dream home that he was building burned down. I think it' s tragic that he had to kill himself to get rid of the pain.

The Iditarod

We are e-mailing different mushers in English class and I e-mailed someone named Zoya DeNure. She used to be an International runway model, which I thought was really cool! She e-mailed me back today!

The Iditarod

In English class we are talking about the Iditarod, and we just finished watching a film about the Iditarod from 2008. Lance Mackey won first place through lots of difficulty, competing with his fierce competitor Jeff King, who got second. My favorite musher is DeeDee Jonrowe, she has had breast cancer since 2002, but the reason I like her is because she is proving that you can come back from something like cancer and complete one of the hardest races on Earth! Our class will even get to communicate with one of the mushers from this years race! I'm excited and ready to see who wins the Iditarod this year!

Red Tide

Red tide is when the water becomes red when algae becomes so numerous that they discolor water. Usually it turn the water a reddish brown color. Lots of countries are affected such as Ireland, Italy, etc. Lobster tomalley are not safe to eat after being exposed to red tide which builds up high levels of toxins and other pollutants. Other animals that are dangerous to eat after red tide are whelks and moon snails. I think that red tide is weird because water is supposed to be blue and it turns red, but it is also dangerous because it releases toxins into the air that causes mild respiratory irritation. Also after a red tide outbreak fish start to die and end up on the beach which becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. If you step on these dead fish it can cause a painful injury or an infection, all because of red tide.

Picture Upload Practice

If I could go on vacation here I would be outside all day. I would go and swim in the ocean, and play in the sand. I would build the biggest sandcastle you have ever seen! After I got tired of that I would go and lay on one of those beach chairs and suntan. After the day was over I would go back to the resort (which I hope my family would let us stay at!). The next day I would convince my parents to let us try that thing where you are attached to this thing and are being pulled in the air by a boat, it looks really fun! That is what I would do if I could go on vactaion here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My English Project
